Application of Municipal Wastewater in Irrigation of Corn under Furrow and Drip Irrigation Systems

Abstract

Municipal wastewater is marginal quality water and using this for irrigation can an important consideration with its disposal is being planned in arid and semi-arid region. Therefore, in order to investigate the effect of furrow and drip irrigation systems on yield, yield components and water use efficiency of corn with using municipal wastewater, a field experiment was carried out during 2012 growing season at experimental farm of Jopar Agriculture Research in Kerman province. The treatments were laid out in split plot a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) design with three replications. The treatments were comprised of four different irrigation, including, T1: furrow irrigation for groundwater, T2: furrow irrigation for wastewater, T3: drip irrigation for groundwater and T4: drip irrigation for wastewater. The results showed, using wastewater led to reduced pH and increase Fe, Zn and Ec. Also In comparison with drip irrigation, furrow irrigation caused parsimony of water usage equal 2100 m3 ha-1, Also the maximum of yield, water use efficiency, 1000-grain weight and number of seeds in a row content observed in drip irrigation for wastewater treatment about 11.23 kg/h, 1.44 kh/m3, 303.78 gr and 49 respectively, but number of rows of seed increase in drip irrigation for groundwater. Therefore, due to the problem of water supply to plant species in the arid and semi-arid regions, nutrient present in wastewater using this, can have a significant role in the stability of plants, reducing costs of irrigation and fertilizers and reduce environmental pollution.
