Decision-Making Patterns of Farmers in Selecting and Changing Cropping Patterns with Emphasis on Adaptation to Climate Change (Case Study: East Azerbaijan)

Abstract
Climate change, as one of the most significant challenges of the present century, has fundamentally transformed agricultural production structures in many countries, particularly developing nations. Selection and modification of cropping patterns represent one of farmers' most important strategies for adapting to this phenomenon. The present research aims to investigate factors influencing farmers' decision-making patterns in selecting and changing cropping patterns with emphasis on adaptation to climate change in East Azerbaijan Province. This research is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in methodology, utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for data analysis. Field data were collected through questionnaires from 278 farmers using stratified sampling. Results indicated that climatic, economic, socio-cultural, and technical-managerial variables have both direct and indirect effects on farmers' decision-making. Among these factors, climate risk perception and governmental support, as mediating variables, play crucial roles in shaping adaptive behavior. The findings emphasize the importance of educational planning, enhancing farmers' mental capacity, and developing institutional support to facilitate climate-adaptive decision-making. This study can serve as a foundation for regional policymaking in sustainable agricultural resource management and food security.
