Potato, is a strategic agricultural crop, holds a significant position in many parts of the world. On the other hand, agricultural production is highly influenced by the consumption of input resources. The aim of this study was to evaluate the energy consumption pattern of potato production under two sprinkler irrigation systems: the classic solid-set system with movable sprinklers (System A) and the Wheel move rain irrigation system (System B). Required data, including total input resources, machine operation hours, and human labor, were randomly collected from 40 selected farms in Dehgolan Plain, Kurdistan Province, during the 2021–2022 cropping season using structured questionnaires. At the end of the irrigation season, the amount of electricity consumed per hectare was obtained from the regional electricity company of Dehgolan. The total input energy in Systems A and B was calculated as 130,698.06 and 161,423.77 MJ/ha, respectively. The output energy in Systems A and B was estimated at 136,800 and 147,600 MJ/ha, respectively. Accordingly, the energy use efficiency index was calculated as 1.04 for System A and 0.91 for System B. The share of direct energy consumption was 83,551.15 MJ/ha in System A and 114,010.38 MJ/ha in System B. The share of renewable energy, which is one of the indicators of sustainability in agro-ecosystems, was 15,631.88 MJ/ha in System A and 17,054.56 MJ/ha in System B. Overall, based on the results obtained from the Dehgolan region, the classic sprinkler irrigation system with movable sprinklers (System A) was found to be to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption compared to the Wheel move rain irrigation system (System B).
