This study used an integrated remote sensing–field investigation in the agricultural research station of the University of Tabriz to monitor several vegetation indices and to estimate the basal crop coefficient of maize. This monitoring was carried out, by means of images from Sentinel-2. Vegetation indices including NDVI, SAVI, FVC and LAI were derived and used for estimation of Kcb. An analysis of the temporal and spatial variation of the indices studied showed a relatively homogeneous pattern representing the establishment, development and senescence of forage maize during the period of the study area. A comparison of the LAI measured in the field and the LAI derived from satellite images showed that the LAI estimated from the highest satellite values showed a better agreement with the field values, resulting in an NRMSE of 15.1 percent and Willmott agreement index (d) of 0.94, compared to the LAI estimated from the average satellite values, resulting in an NRMSE of 26.8 percent and d index of 0.84. The results also showed that the Kcb followed a rising trend according to the growth stage of maize and reached a maximum value of 1.30 in the mid-growing period. The comparison of the Kcb values derived from satellite images with the values proposed by FAO showed moderate to good agreement with a correlation coefficient of 0.76. However, other statistical indicators showed a slight error in reproducing the detailed variations in the crop coefficient. The assessment of the NSE and d with respective values of 0.53 and 0.86, further indicated that the satellite- approach estimated the crop coefficient at a moderate-to-good level of agreement compared to the FAO method. Overall, the results indicate that Sentinel-2 images have acceptable potential for monitoring crop growth conditions and can provide useful information for irrigation management, provided that local calibration is recommended.
